Emotional Wellbeing App

Objective

In light of market research showing a decline in employee wellbeing, an HR client realized it needed to innovate its wellbeing offerings. The client wanted to explore a new product idea that addressed emotional wellbeing.

Process

To create a product concept based on data, I leveraged research findings to understand:

  • Needs and pain points of target users

  • Steps towards healthy emotional wellbeing

Working with the design team, I then explored ideas for key features for this experience, and created user flows and wireframes that highlighted main functions within the app.

Research Sources

  • Interviews with target demographic

  • Market research on employee wellbeing

  • Research on psychology and responding to emotional states

Key Insights

  • Majority of millennials have a negative perception of their emotional and mental wellbeing

  • Most millennials say they don’t have time to work on their mental wellbeing, but admit that they then spend “mindless” time online or watching TV

  • The 3 steps to responding to emotions is to acknowledge the emotion, give the emotion a label, and engage in a positive action

These insights served as the foundation to creating the product features.

Results

The product concept was a mobile app that nudged you to engage in emotional wellbeing activities during your free/down time, based on what it knew about your schedule and habits. Users would be able to identify and track their emotional wellbeing journey over time, and each interaction would help the app become smarter with activity recommendations.
